30/4/77

30th of April 2017, 40 years from the first march organized the 30th of April 1977 by the mothers of the “Plaza de Mayo” in Buenos Aires in front of the Casa Rosada presidential palace, while trying to learn what had happened to their children, in public defiance of the government’s state terrorism intended to silence all opposition. For the mothers, their disappeared daughters and son are still alive… Buenos Aires. Argentina, April 2017. © Luca Bonacini. Farewell to Oscar Niemeyer

“I deliberately disregarded the right angle and rationalist architecture designed with ruler and square to boldly enter the world of curves and straight lines offered by reinforced concrete. […] This deliberate protest arose from the environment in which I lived [Rio de Janeiro], with its white beaches, its huge mountains, its old baroque churches, and the beautiful suntanned women.” Oscar Niemeyer (1907-2012) in his memories “As curvas do tempo”.
In addition to a strong aesthetic sense, Niemeyer also had a deep social sensibility. When he was asked how would he describe life, in one word, he answered: “solidarity”.
