Srebrenica, out of focus

Every year, on July 11th, Srebrenica remembers one of the most horrific massacres in recent history. In 1995, during the Bosnian war, more than 8,000 Bosniaks were brutally murdered by Bosnian Serb troops.

In this small town of Bosnia and Herzegovina, every year hundreds of bodies are buried in a collective funeral attended silently by thousands of people. Most of them are women, wives, mothers, daughters, who survived from the murderous fury, and who gather at the memorial of Potocari to bid farewell to their loved ones.
It’s extremely difficult to record with a camera even the smallest part of their pain. The faces I see are swollen with grief, and guilt-feelings and emotions are overwhelming. Behind the camera, the eyes get blurred, the hands start shaking… everything around turns out of focus. It’s hard to believe the unbelievable.
